Penndale MLK Day Sock Roll and Breakfast Bag Challenge!

The MLK Day challenge is a way to give back to your community by creating Sock Rolls and Breakfast Bags for community members experiencing homelessness and/or food insecurity.

A Sock Roll is a pair of mens’ athletic/crew socks that is wrapped with a granola bar and pack of crackers and finished off with a ribbon and tag from a student.  Socks are the number one requested item for those experiencing homelessness. This project will bring warmth, some comfort, and nourishment to those in need!

A Breakfast Bag is a clear plastic bag that includes traditional breakfast staples that are shelf stable (such as granola bars, oatmeal packets, fruit cups, tea bags, etc) along with a hand-made card with a picture or inspirational quote or message letting the recipient know you have cared for and thought of them.

Beginning Monday, December 13, 2021, through Friday, January 7, 2022 the following items were collected:
Men’s adult size athletic/crew socks - NEW socks only please :)
Granola bars/breakfast bars
Peanut butter or cheese cracker packs
Single oatmeal packets
Fruit cups
Tea bags or instant coffee packs
Other breakfast snack items

On Monday, January 10, students from the Leo Club, Voices of Empowerment, and NJHS put together the sock rolls and breakfast bags in the Penndale cafeteria.

Students earned one PennTime point for each item they contributed. The PennTime with the most points accumulated was rewarded with a donut party!  Donations for Donuts!!
